LED for retail store

This Case Study refers to the implementation of an energy saving intervention project to the lighting systems of a clothing chain store. The project was carried as cooperation between All Options and Effective Energy.

Store Info

The clothing outlet store is located on the 1st floor of a Mall in Amarousion. The total area of the store is 85m², and the heated volume is 425m³. The store’s lighting used to be covered by 53 HQI lamps 70W its. The heating-cooling needs are covered by an air-conditioning unit-heat pump.

Smart Energy Metering Systems

The chain store, aiming on energy management and saving, decided proceeded to the installation of smart energy metering systems in February 2013. After completing the Energy Consumption Pre-analysis and the Walk Through Audit, our Energy Efficiency department proceeded in the installation of two smart energy metering points:

  1. one for the store mains and
  2. one for the heating panel.

Furthermore, the store took advantage of the benchmarking tools & KPI’s cloud platform and thus acquired substantial energy management and supervision of its facilities.

Through the platform’s tools, several energy simulations of intervention scenarios took place. The lighting system replacement scenario that showed the greatest energy saving was chosen and implemented.

Lighting Study

A Lighting Study was carried out ensuring that the result of our interventions is going to cover the high expectations of visual comfort and color efficiency for the retail store in addition to maintaining the store’s corporate identity. The solution of maintaining the luminaires and replacing only the old HQI (70W) lamps with new, special, energy saving LED (21W) 4th Generation, proved to be the optimal solution that would cover all the needs from above and achieve high percentages of energy saving with low ROI. Furthermore, a reorder of the luminaires and the installation of new ones took place, so that dimly lit parts of the store would be highlighted.

Saving Results

On 11 August 2013 the replacement took place. The achieved reduction of energy consumption during the first month, after the interventions (lighting, heating-cooling) reached the 46% (Table 2), while the reduction that was achieved only by the lighting replacement reached the 50%.

Our energy consumption monitoring platform is able to compare different consumption time periods through charts that show the consumption values before and after any intervention (Figure 3), so that the results of any energy upgrade become “measurable”.

Saving Energy from the air conditioning unit

In addition to saving energy from using visual comfort luminaires, our platform revealed the energy consumption reduction of the air conditioning unit. The LED luminaires emit low heat amounts compared to the conventional lighting systems. Thus, the air conditioning unit consumes less energy (Figure 4) to maintain the thermal comfort levels in the store, than it used to with conventional lights (Figure 5-6) when it operated on high consuming levels to compensate for the additional heating that was emitted by them.

Financial benefits and low maintenance costs

LED Technology products are the most developed lighting products and they have long life time (50.000 -100.000 hours) comparing with HQI lights that have estimated life time 8.000 hours according to the manufacturers’ specs.

For the specific operating hours of the retail store, the maintenance/replacement interval of the HQI lights was every 2 years. The new LED lighting systems brings this interval to 10 years.

 

Environmental benefits

Beyond the economic benefits that rose from the energy saving intervention, the specific outlet store reduced the CO2 emissions to approximately 5 tons/year, proving in practice the chain store’s sensitivity on environmental protection issues. Moreover, the lack of use of dangerous chemical elements, render LED lights safe for use, while making their recycling easier, since their components can be recycled after being collected from the special electronic device recycle bins.
